What to Expect During the Dental Implant Process

Posted on September 16, 2022May 24, 2023 By Ruby Bussau

Dental implants are an excellent solution for those who want to replace their missing teeth. They are a popular choice because they are durable, long-lasting, and can provide a natural-looking smile. However, the thought of getting dental implants can be intimidating for some people. In this article, we will go over the dental implant process, from start to finish, to help you understand what to expect.

Dental Implant Process

Consultation and Evaluation

The first step in the dental implant process is to schedule a consultation with a dental implant specialist. During this consultation, the dentist will evaluate your teeth, gums, and jawbone to determine if you are a good candidate for dental implants. They may take X-rays or 3D scans to get a better look at your teeth and jawbone. The dentist will also discuss your dental history and any medical conditions you may have that could affect the success of the implants.

Treatment Plan

Once the dentist has evaluated your teeth and jawbone, they will create a treatment plan that is tailored to your individual needs. This treatment plan will outline the number of implants needed, the type of implant, and the steps required for implant surgery. The dentist will also discuss any additional procedures that may be necessary, such as bone grafting or tooth extractions.

Implant Placement

The next step in the dental implant process is the placement of the implants. The dentist will use a local anesthetic to numb the area where the implant will be placed. Then, they will create a small incision in the gum tissue to access the jawbone. The implant will be placed in the jawbone and secured in place with a screw. After the implant is placed, the dentist will close the incision with stitches.

Healing and Integration

After the implant is placed, it will take some time for it to integrate with the jawbone. This process is called osseointegration and can take several months. During this time, the dentist will monitor the implant to ensure that it is healing properly. You will also need to take special care of the implant during this time to ensure that it heals correctly.

Abutment Placement

Once the implant has fully integrated with the jawbone, the dentist will place an abutment on top of the implant. The abutment is a small connector that will hold the crown or bridge in place. The abutment placement is a minor procedure that can be done in the dentist’s office with local anesthesia.

Crown or Bridge Placement

The final step in the dental implant process is the placement of the crown or bridge. The crown or bridge is custom-made to match the colour and shape of your natural teeth. The dentist will attach the crown or bridge to the abutment, completing the implant process.

Conclusion

Getting dental implants can be a life-changing experience. It can restore your smile and boost your confidence. By following the steps outlined in this article, you can have a better understanding of what to expect during the dental implant process. If you are interested in dental implants, we encourage you to request a free consultation with a dental implant specialist. They can provide you with more information about the process and determine if dental implants are right for you.
